Nurturing Self-Compassion in 2025!

True compassionate leadership flourishes when nurtured by self-compassion. As leaders, we can only truly extend compassion to others after we look inward to understand our own challenges and work to alleviate our own suffering. This requires deeply listening to our own needs and thoughtfully caring for them. Too often, we neglect our own needs to serve others. It is important to treat ourselves with kindness, patience, and understanding, especially in times of challenge or failure.

Self-compassion enables us to recognize our mistakes, be accountable for them, and use them as motivation to grow. Only by offering this compassion to ourselves can we connect with others.

Practicing self-compassion fosters belonging because when we recognize who we are and what we value, we are not threatened by differing opinions and develop the confidence to honor the unique qualities of others. This leads to stronger, more inclusive groups and long-lasting relationships with others.

Below are a few steps you can take to practice self-compassion:

-       Recognize when you are facing a challenge or experiencing stress and allow yourself the time and grace to work through difficult moments

-       Be mindful of the emotions underlying a challenging situation

-       Acknowledge our shared humanity

-       Extend the same kindness and caring to yourself as you would to a friend

-       Use your setbacks as opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive

-       Reach out for support from family, friends or trusted people in your life

-       Celebrate your victories!

We often underestimate the importance of nurturing peace, kindness, and compassion within ourselves. In 2025, we hope you will take some time to celebrate your achievements and practice patient with the goals you are working to achieve.

May the new year be filled with compassion, joy, magic, and gratitude!

The Stop Campus Hazing Act Becomes Law

The bipartisan Stop Campus Hazing Act (SCHA), officially signed into law by President Biden in December, increases transparency, accountability and the prevention of hazing in higher education institutions. This groundbreaking legislation marks a pivotal moment for student safety and well-being. ATLF is proud to join in the team of organizations successfully advocating for this new legislation!

Hazing is a dangerous problem on college campuses that undermines the mission of higher education. The National Study of Student Hazing found that more than half of college students involved in clubs, teams, and organizations experience hazing. Since 2000, there have been more than 50 hazing-related deaths. Countless hazing incidents go unreported.

This bill improves hazing reporting by requiring colleges to include hazing incidents in their Annual Security
Report. It also prevents hazing by establishing campus-wide, research-based education and prevention programs. The new law mandates that colleges publish hazing prevention policies and list the organizations that have violated them, equipping students to make informed decisions about joining organizations on campus.

SCHA reflects the years of collective efforts of families, survivors, researchers, and organizations and the commitment of lawmakers who championed this issue.

In 2007, Gary DeVercelly, Jr., a student at Rider University, lost his life to hazing. Since then, his parents, Julie and Gary DeVercelly, have worked tirelessly to bring awareness to the dangers of hazing and to create lasting change. The DeVercellys along with the Cleary Center, Stop Hazing.org, bipartisan support from Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Representatives Lucy McBath (D-GA) and Jeff Duncan (R-SC) ensured the bill’s success.

ATLF Ambassadors’ Corner

Athena Tsialas - ATLF Ambassador

At the Antonio Tsialas Leadership Foundation, compassion for others is everything. However, compassion for ourselves is equally important. Throughout ambassador training, the importance of self-compassion was emphasized through centering exercises and reminding ambassadors to ensure they are taking care of themselves. If someone is not feeling the best emotionally, mentally, or physically, they cannot help others. These teachings have been helpful as I navigate college far from home. In my freshman year, I had to constantly remind myself to practice self-compassion as I entered a new environment. In those moments, I remembered the meetings with other ambassadors where we reflected on ways to demonstrate compassion towards oneself. This practice allowed me to become more involved in my campus community, eventually leading to a successful freshman year.
