MAKING SPACE FOR LEADERS

TO INSPIRE CHANGE

ree

We all have lives filled with responsibilities, distractions, and deadlines. As compassionate leaders, we must make space to create positive change, even in our busy lives. Only when we create space to develop a vision for the future can we transform old and dangerous practices, like hazing, into positive and compassionate traditions.

At ATLF, we’ve developed the ATLF CLEARING model as a framework for compassionate leadership. This model emphasizes the importance of Collaboration, Listening, Empathy in action, Accountability, Responsibility, Inclusion, Nurturing, and Gratitude, but there is also a deliberate space left open to allow for change and growth.

This space is where transformation occurs, where we develop our vision of what is possible and set clear goals. In this space, we inspire others to join us on our journey to create effective and cohesive groups.

That can mean creating a physical space where your group can safely explore new ideas or simply setting aside time and nurturing a mindset to assess current dynamics and envision new possibilities.

But how do we do that?  There are specific steps you can take to create space for change.

  1. Dedicate time to reflect on current traditions and practices. Consider what aspects of the group are the most powerful and what habits may be detrimental

  2. Establish shared agreements as guidelines to ensure positive communication and collaboration.

  3. Identify barriers to change and work with your group to overcome them.

  4. Encourage a growth mindset that focuses on creating positive change 6)

  5. Strategically unplug. We live in a world of constant distractions and interruptions.  Designating time to step away from the digital realm can help to create space for reflection, goal setting, and new ideas.

Most importantly, we must all take action. Compassionate leaders do not simply envision a better world; they work to make it a reality.  What actions are you willing to take in the coming weeks to make space for change?

ATLF Ambassadors Corner

Last May, more than 40 high school students attended our information session to learn more about joining the 2025-2026 ATLF Ambassador cohort. Students expressed excitement about developing compassionate leadership skills and learning about hazing prevention. As ambassadors, they will learn to share their skills and knowledge with their own schools and communities.

Consider joining a program that current and former ambassadors rave about!

"This program completely changes the conversation about leadership."

  • Sofia Romanov Imber

"I highly recommend this program to anyone but be ready because your life will be changed forever!"

  • Michael Bittner Mcpherson

"The program is focused on making real changes to prevent hazing and educate leaders."

  • Jackson Pegg
