NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2024

ACCOUNTABILITY IN LEADERSHIP

After our son Antonio passed, following a “dirty rush” event he attended at Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at Cornell University, we were not only devastated by the excruciating pain of his loss, but also by the lack of accountability from those involved.

The secrecy and the lack of accountability that surround hazing are the main reasons why it is still prevalent on our college campuses today. Sadly, according to research from the University of Maine, 55 percent of college students who participate in clubs, teams and organizations experience hazing, yet only 5% report that they have been hazed.

When student leaders and organizations know that they will be held accountable, they are less likely to engage in harmful behaviors. In turn, new and existing members feel empowered to report inappropriate and harmful behaviors because they know that action will be taken.  For these reasons, we must encourage the new generation of leaders to end silence and practice accountability.

Accountability is one of the pillars of our CLEARING model for compassionate leadership. To be accountable means taking responsibility for our actions even, or perhaps especially, when the outcome of our choices is negative. Only then can we find solutions to correct our conduct and avoid repetition of damaging behaviors and situations.

Accountability fosters a culture of trust, safety and respect that is essential for students to grow and thrive. It also positively impacts the organizations, creates the basis for true bonding and improves team performance.

Act today to embrace accountability:

  • Support accountability through national hazing prevention efforts. Contact your Senators using this quick form https://stophazing.org/policy/action and urge them to vote YES on S. 2901/STOP CAMPUS HAZING ACT (SCHA) for campus safety.

  • Learn the process for reporting inappropriate behavior and situations at your school and pledge to hold schools, teams and clubs accountable for hazing practices.

  • Work towards making personal accountability part of your own mindset. Recognize your own mistakes, reflect and learn from them.

  • Become an ATLF high school, college, parent or administrative ambassador to learn compassionate leadership skills and become an advocate in hazing prevention.

ATLF Ambassadors' Corner

As an ambassador, I have received guidance on being a compassionate leader by spreading hazing awareness and learning how to prevent it. This knowledge and practice have made me a better friend and empowered me to build healthier relationships with the people I meet and will serve when I go to college. Our community needs compassionate leaders now more than ever!
