Fostering Compassionate Leadership: Redefining Responsibility in Student Initiation Rituals
This fall, as students begin joining new groups and teams, we focus on responsibility as one of the pillars of compassionate leadership. Leaders are responsible for treating all new and existing members with respect, building trust within their organization and welcoming new members with rituals that are memorable, fun, inclusive and safe.
Â
Being a leader is not about authority or holding power, but about connecting to the needs of all individuals and creating safe spaces where members feel valued and supported. Group leaders must consider their responsibility for the wellbeing of all group members.
Â
Vital to the responsible leadership is to evaluate initiation traditions to ensure they benefit all group members while creating positive memories to develop group bonding. Leaders should take a fresh look at all traditions to ensure these rituals are responsible and compassionate.
Consider how initiation rituals support the desire for belonging and comradery!
Innovate! Launch one new idea supporting this to make your initiation process more amazing!
Develop thoughtful procedures to keep your pledges safe!
Â
When leaders model responsibility, it serves as an example for other students to follow. Students are then able to take responsibility for their own actions and wellbeing, which creates a safe experience for everyone. Make your group the model for a new era of healthy, inclusive and fun initiation rituals!
